Alfred, Lord Tennyson ( 1809 - 1892 ) wrote this poem to honor  the British Light Calvary  in the Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War in the Ukraine.  Out of 637 men,  247 were killed or wounded in this suicidal charge, which later, it was found to be caused by a miscommunication of those in command.

The Crimean War ( 1854 - 1856 ) was the war that Florence Nightingale nursed the wounded, and through her tireless efforts, saved many from dying.

A note of interest to poet lovers . . . at the age of fourteen, Tennyson heard of the death of Lord Byron,  and unhappy at this news of one he so admired,  he wrote on a rock  in Lincolnshire: "Byron is dead."
